Client Falls

CanCare’s Falls Prevention Program was implemented in 2005.  Since the program has been in place we have been providing increased education about falls, monitoring client falls, and following up with clients to prevent injuries and other fall risks.  Here is some information from our Falls Prevention Program based on calendar year.

2009:

  • 213 clients had at least one fall
  • Approximately 83% of the falls occurred when CanCare employees were not present
  • Approximately 30 clients (1.3%) had more than one fall
  • Approximately 38% of the falls resulted in injury
  • Approximately 2.1% of the falls resulted in a hospital admission
  • Over 79% of the falls had appropriate follow up documented

2010:

  • 149 clients had at least one fall
  • Approximately 84% of the falls occurred when CanCare employees were not present
  • Approximately 40 clients (2.2%) had more than one fall
  • Approximately 22% of the falls resulted in injury
  • Approximately 4% of the falls resulted in a hospital admission
  • Over 89% of the falls had appropriate follow up documented

What difference has this made:  We have identified clients at a high risk of falling and provided the appropriate care and suggestions to reduce and minimize this risk.  We have identified the main reasons for these falls and provided related education and support for our clients. For example, education to clients related to how their medications might impact their balance. We continue to monitor all falls and ensure we follow up to support our clients to remain safe in their homes.
